Quick action and gas detection ensured safety for all

On April 16, 2025, the Boston Fire Department’s hazmat team responded to reports of an unknown odor at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel. According to the department, the call came in around 5:15 a.m., and crews quickly arrived on scene to investigate.

Firefighters traced the odor to a small ammonia leak coming from a mini refrigerator inside the hotel. Using gas detection equipment, the hazmat team was able to safely identify the source, remove the refrigerator, and ventilate the affected area. After monitoring air quality levels, all readings were found to be normal and the scene was cleared without injury or evacuation.

This incident serves as a real-world example of why reliable gas detection is critical, even in places you wouldn’t expect. Whether in a hotel, school, lab, or office, the presence of a hazardous gas like ammonia can pose a serious health risk without warning.

With hurricane season almost here, safety preparation needs to go beyond bottled water and flashlights. One of the most overlooked, yet critical, areas is gas detection.

Severe weather can lead to gas leaks, power outages, and confined space hazards, especially when backup generators and emergency equipment come into use. That is why it is essential to ensure your gas detection equipment is not only present but working properly and compliant with safety standards.

At Apollo Safety, we recommend every organization take two key steps ahead of major storms:

  1. Have the right gas detection equipment in place. Whether you use portable or fixed monitors, your detectors are often your only warning sign of dangerous gas exposure.
  1. Make sure every unit is properly calibrated and compliant. Sensors can drift over time, and even a small inaccuracy can make the difference in detecting a real threat. Proper calibration every 90 days is the best way to ensure your readings are accurate and reliable when you need them most.

The last place you want to discover whether your gas detector needs service is in the middle of a storm.

Apollo Safety offers service and calibration contracts that help you stay ahead of compliance, avoid downtime, and keep your people protected. These agreements ensure your equipment is always in top condition with fast, reliable turnaround and the option for loaner units if needed.

Let us help you prepare now, before the next weather event hits.

Your safety is our priority, and preparation starts with trusted equipment.

June is National Safety Month, a great reminder that safety is not just something to think about at work. It is part of every moment, whether you are on the job, driving your car, cooking in the kitchen, or spending time with your family.

At Apollo Safety, protecting workers and workplaces is what we do every day. But this month especially, we want to encourage everyone to take a wider view of safety. It is not only about the right gas detection equipment on the job site — it is also about the small steps that can protect you, your team, and your loved ones at home.

Workplace Safety Matters

For companies working with gas detection equipment, regular maintenance and calibration is essential. Meters that are not properly serviced can give false readings or fail when you need them most. It only takes one malfunction to put workers at serious risk. National Safety Month is a perfect time to review your gas detection program. Are your meters being calibrated on schedule? Are older units due for replacement? Are new team members properly trained on how to use and respond to alarms?

A little preparation goes a long way toward preventing costly and dangerous incidents.

Home and Family Safety Reminders

National Safety Month is also about keeping your home safe. Here are some simple but often overlooked ways to protect your family:

  • Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure they are working and change the batteries if you have not done so in the past six months.
  • Review your fire escape plan. Does everyone in the house know how to get out in case of a fire?
  • Inspect cords and outlets. Frayed wires and overloaded outlets are one of the leading causes of house fires.
  • Keep a first aid kit stocked and ready. Bandages, antiseptics, pain relievers, and other basics should be easy to find in an emergency.
  • Store chemicals and cleaners safely. Keep hazardous materials out of reach of children and pets.
  • Practice safe driving. No phone call or text is worth risking a crash. Stay alert and drive responsibly.

These small steps take very little time but can make all the difference in a crisis.
